Butterflies are creatures from Planet Earth, Mobius and the Special Zone. They are well known for their beauty and symmetrical patterns on their wings.
The most well-known butterfly in Sonic the Comic is Chrysalis, an ally of the Freedom Fighters. She is a fashion designer who is keen to keep friend Amy Rose up with the latest trends. During her first appearance, she was attacked by Sonic the Hedgehog, believing her to be an associate of The Family.
Native Mobian butterflies are much smaller and resemble Earth insects. They have never had a prominent role, always sticking to their backgrounds. Artists, particularly Richard Elson, often added them to the background of a panel if a peaceful scene was to be established. Key appearances are at the end of Showdown and Game Over, symbolising a return to green environments after a particularly damaging event.
